elli143 's review for:
The Last Battle
by C.S. Lewis
Oof. I haven't been writing reviews for each of the individual Narnia books so far, but reading this book in 2022 highlighted certain aspects of this series that are problematic, specifically, the descriptions and treatment of Calormen (you might as well have called them colored men as they were clearly intended to be understood). Described as savages, haughty, the "Darkies" are the villains in this series, while the white Narnians were the heroes. I was able to overlook the implicit racism in earlier books, but it was on full display in the grand finale and definitely made me cringe on more than one occasion.
It was a beautiful end to the series, but wow the implicit assumption of white people == good and black people == bad is on full display here, and no amount of storytelling can compensate for that.
