The Jungle by Upton Sinclair by Upton Sinclair

dark informative sad medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix

3.0

This book is a sweeping condemnation of the treatment of the poor in the U.S. during the early 1900s. The plot is depressing and it does not let up. The characters exist to show the horrors that the most vulnerable are bludgeoned by. While Sinclair paints vivid scene after scene for the reader, the book really only goes in depth on one character. Ultimately, I’d recommend reading for the expose, not for the characters.
