Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat

  • Strong character development? Yes

5.0

Ugh ugh ugh, one of the BEST BOOKS I've read in a very long time. There are so many things I loved about this book, most of all the way that it already feels like a classic elegant fantasy story. There are light and dark forces, knights, reborn soldiers.

C.S. Pacat does an incredible job with the writing and characters. In less than 500 pages, we are introduced to several characters (Will, James, Violet, Justice, Cyprian, Katharine to name a few), all of whom felt well rounded, complex and real. Most are morally grey - like real people! Their relationships were also dynamic - romance, friendship, mentorship, animosity, enemies, grudges, strangers. Will and Violet (heartwarming) and Will and James (oh wow) were my favourites.

That ending was MEGA, so powerful, such strong writing and plot development.
