i have SO many mixed feelings on this book so bear with me while i try to explain them coherently. they still might not be coherent, but this is what y'all get.

i loved the premise of this book so so SO much. i love lesbian/sapphic vampires, and this is that in a different historical setting, which i also love. there was so much about this book i loved in theory. it checked off all my boxes.

buuuut then there's the execution. the plot is interesting in my opinion, but it's the characters i can't stand. i know elise and i come from different eras, but i would NOT be able to stand my father treating me the way he treats her. and maybe part of that is because i'm naturally sassy and sarcastic, but also... elise is so anxious she can't do most things. having anxiety is okay, trust me when i say i get it, but you don't have to allowed yourself to be belittled. like it's not one or the other.

along similar lines, at the end, the argument between layla and elise also upset me because layla said something that struck a nerve, and elise had EVERY RIGHT to snap, to argue with layla after everything she's been through, but she didn't. there was only ONE sentence of a reaction before it was forgotten. that's not how most emotions work, but alright.

that doesn't mean i hate this book; to be honest, i think the majority of it is enjoyable. it's not like i hated reading it, but there were things that i didn't like or found to take away from the book. it's a distinctly average book, in my opinion, but it's still good. just... not a stand-out book for me. some people might love it, but i am not one of them.
