The Rose & the Dagger by Renée Ahdieh
2.0

This book was good.
That's it.
I didn't love it as much as I remember loving [b: A Wrath and The Dawn|18798983|The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1)|Renée Ahdieh|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1417956963l/18798983._SY75_.jpg|26724902], but it was a worthy sequel, no doubt (queue Gwen Stefani.)
I'm sorry. I make bad jokes.
But it was just too boring at some points. I feel as if [a: Renée Ahdieh|4600197|Renée Ahdieh|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1487663209p2/4600197.jpg] dragged on with the descriptions. Also, I'm getting really tired of the same female protagonists that seem to be in every single YA fantasy/dystopia book I've read. I can easily draw comparisons of Shazi to Celaena to June to Katniss, hell maybe even a bit of Laia (though albeit slightly), and I know, I know, it's actually good because that means that there are such strong female characters nowadays, which don't get me wrong, is absolutely fantastic! But the thing is, they're all the same. It's like rereading the same girl in every single YA fantasy/dystopia book, and that's not good. At all. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I'm getting tired of the generic "beautiful, strong, ferocious heroine who's got a bad temper" because if you notice, (with the slight exception to Laia) that's all of them.
So is this book good? Hell yeah. But does it stand out from the rest? Hell no.
