Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis

5.0

"Dreadful" by Caitlin Rozakias is a delightful, cozy fantasy where the villain wakes up with amnesia and reconsiders his former evil ways, even though he can't remember them! It's a story filled with humour, heart, magic, evil wizards, goblins, sassy princesses, heroes, and even killer moat squids. There's nothing more one could ask for in a book.
Dread Lord Gavrax is a captivating main character, and I enjoyed witnessing his transformation from a dark wizard to possibly not evil, but not precisely a good wizard. The rest of the characters are just as excellent, and I loved each of them – especially the endearing goblins.
The book is extraordinary because of its layers. For instance, it uses the word "garlic" 17 times on one page for comic effect, and then a few pages later, Gav contemplates what it means to be a woman in power. The blend of humour and thoughtful moments is masterfully done.
This debut novel is fantastic and has become one of my new favourites. You should read this immediately if you enjoy humorous fantasy novels featuring not-so-dark wizards, goblins in garlic costumes, and enchanted roosters.
