Red Rising: Sons of Ares #1 by Rik Hoskin, Eli Powell, Pierce Brown

Now THAT was a good story right there. The graphic novel format worked really well for this fast paced and action packed storyline. Seeing the world of Red Rising in full illustration is really cool and fun to see depicted. The brutality of the world is very present and even more visceral in this visual format, and the ways they distinguish different colors of the pyramid by changing the color of the characters speech bubble to match was very smart on their end and made it easy to keep track. I liked a lot of the parallels that this style allowed itself to make, and it felt very cinematic almost. I usually only save 5 star reads for books that made me feel some sort of strong emotional reactions, and somehow this one did. Despite knowing all of what would happen, as this is a prequel about a character we already know, I still found myself heavily invested and even pumping my fists at some moments. It really nails home the whole theme of this series of having characters who were forced into becoming larger than themselves because of the oppressive and prejudiced society around them. I can’t wait to read the next two volumes, and I imagine they will have similar scores.
