Becoming Ghost
by Cathy Linh Che
In this collection of poems the author takes an autobiographical approach. Her parents, both Vietnamese immigrants left Vietnam right before the war. Ironically, they both played extras in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. The author interchanges between her and her parents POV to weave the story of her family as well as uses references to Apocalypse Now throughout.
The author covers some tough and timely subjects. tw: for child abuse (emotional and physical), PTSD, genocide, child death, racism, covid-19 and the Vietnam war.
This was a very important collection for the author to share, I appreciate her honesty and for her speaking her truth.
The only thing that made it hard to follow was who's POV each poem was from. Also the references to Apocalypse Now. (I've never seen it.) The notes section at the end explained things, but it would've been more beneficial to have that at the beginning of the collection.
Thank you to Atria books for an ARC in return for an honest review!
