The King in Yellow, Deluxe Edition: An early classic of the weird fiction genre
by Robert W. Chambers, Robert W. Chambers
This is a moody book written in the late 19th century by an interesting fellow. It established an oddly lurid and rich mythos surrounding the King in Yellow and its kingdom in Carcosa. The stories are fairly typical of late 19th century writing. He was a contemporary of Ambrose Bierce, whom we all know for “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” which was turned into a thought provoking Twilight Zone episode.
It is cool that he created this mythos, based upon the Victorian trope of reading a forbidden text that curses you with knowledge that makes you go mad … or does it?
The concepts carry over to present day horror pretty well.
