Midnight in Everwood by M.A. Kuzniar
4.0

This retelling of The Nutcracker is an enchanting fairytale for adults. Set in the early 1900s, the story revolves around Marietta, a young socialite who dreams about a career as a prima ballerina. Dancing is her way of escaping her priviliged, but suffocating life, but her father has decided that after Christmas she has to stop dancing and get married to her new neighbour, Dr. Drosselmeier. He enchants people with his special mechanisms and toys, but Marietta doesn't trust him. On Christmas Eve, while hiding from him, Marietta is transported to a magical Winter Wonderland. She is captivated by it, but soon discovers that Everwood is ruled by a cruel King. He forces her to be part of his court, to dance at all his parties, and in his gilded prison she meets two of his other pets: Dellara and Pirlipata. In order to be able to follow her dreams she needs their help, and the help from the attractive and mysterious Captain Legat, to get back to her world.

What I liked most about this book is how Maria Kuzniar's writing made Everwood so very magical, her description of all the enchanting elements really drew me in. It reminded me of the world in the movie The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and of Narnia. It makes this a great book to read around Christmas, also because the events in the book take place around Christmas. I liked Marietta's journey and how the book voices the message that you should follow your dreams. The oldfashioned way the characters spoke, though very fitting to the time in which the story is set, did put me off a bit and I predicted some of the revelations at the end of the book, but I really enjoyed this nonetheless.
