The Last Star by Rick Yancey
1.0

I sadly hyped this book up in my head before reading it.

I adored the 5th Wave, at the time, I hadn't read a decent YA book since Hunger Games and was surprised by the interesting characters, strong writing, and intriguing plot. I ate it all up pretty soon. The infinite Sea was a bit of a let down for me, I didn't feel as if the story progressed all that much. It felt more like a filler episode in a Season of a Series than a full-fledged book. Despite that, I had hopes The Last Star would be different and it was in that regard.

The book excels act action and character. The reason I adored this series so much was because of the characters. (Cassie and Ben being my favorites).

Ringer has never been my favorite character, I finder her character very unlikable and that she's too cold, and a bit uptight for my liking, but her chapters are at least enjoyable to read (for the most part). Cassie has always been my favorite, I like her snarky personality and her love for her brother. However, I feel as if Yancey pushed Cassie to the sidelines in this book and pushed Ringer to the forefront as if he regretted making Cassie the main character.

The fact that Cassie is the one who ends up dying while everyone else survives annoys me to no end. I don't mind killing of a main character, and he does try adding reason behind it that I at least understand, but I still think it was ridiculous. I thought throughout the book Ringer would be the character that died. I thought that's kind of how he was setting her up.

Ringer is now enhanced by the 12th System that makes her stronger, faster, and damn near indestructible. She kept talking about how she can't feel anything anymore. Not when Cassie breaks her nose, not the cold water during a shower -- nothing. I made myself believe this was leading to her sacrificing herself for humans since she didn't feel human and more and she wanted too. Plus, the moment Vosch gave her the detonator pill, I assumed that would be the way it ends. (At least I was right about that.) Personally, I think killing Ringer the same way Cassie died would have made more sense; but I digress.

I loath that this book made Ringer Pregnant. I outwardly groaned when she admitted it to Ben. I think the only reason that was even mentioned was because Cassie dies and that's what they name the baby girl.

--- End of Spoilers --

This was an OKAY finish to the series. It had some problems and by the end was exhausting. The Epilogue was sadly underwhelming, although it traces each character, I don't feel like it gave enough information about Earth's situation and what's going on. I think some of my disappointment with this novel was getting too excited about it.

Overall a decent read, and I haven't decided if I can call this an amazing series yet...
