The Prestige
by Christopher Priest
What a fascinatingly weird novel! If you've seen the movie, you know the general shape of things, but the book is both very similar and completely different from the novel. The structure is a bit more nested here and the genre shifts into very different territory here as well.
I really enjoyed this novel, though don't know how much was actually gained by the narrative happening in the present. That's not to say I didn't like it but that I think it may have already been captured through the epistolary elements.
But, man, what a great novel. Even if you've seen the movie, there are big twists and surprises. Some of them are the same as the movie, yet they seem twistier all over again.
Excellent stuff.
