Maximum Ride Forever by James Patterson

1.0

Ugh these books just keep getting worse and worse. The only reason I picked this one up was in hope that James Patterson would at least try to make a believable ending. I mean, I highly doubt that he even plans his books. If he did, "Maximum Ride Forever" wouldn't even exist, because the series would have concluded with "Nevermore" like it was supposed to.

Rant aside, here's the summary: The Flock is back (post- apocalypse), and everybody wants to head to different parts of the world. Because nobody can agree with each other, the Flock splits up. While the various members of the Flock are trying to locate fellow survivors, take on the new villain, or stay alive, a mysterious figure is trying to hunt each of them down one by one.

The Flock contains 6, 7, or 8 people, depending on who you count. There's Max, the main character who's stubborn, determined, and let's be honest- a little arrogant. There's Fang. The same age as Max, Fang is dark, quiet, and keeps to himself. Iggy, blind, is also the same age as Max and Fang, and is the Flock's best cook. Gazzy is 9, and is freakishly obsessed with bombs and anything that explodes. Angel, 7 years old and Gazzy's biological sister is an annoying mind reader who's always up to something counterproductive. Dylan is only, like, 2 years old but has the mind and body of a 15 year old. He joined the Flock later in the series, and is programmed to be Max's soulmate. Total, the dog with wings and a voice box was picked up by Angel at some point, and never left.

So I gave this book one star, because it's just truly, horribly written. There is practically no plot, and what little plot there is, is full of holes. You can also tell that there was no planning, whatsoever, for this book. The most stupidest things happen, random plot twists occur every other chapter, and it's full of filler.

Plot Twists
Yep, they get a whole section to themselves. The book is choke full of them. I'm not even kidding. I feel like every time another "cliff hanger" or "plot twist" comes up, I die a little inside. There is nothing suspenseful about them, because there are just so many. Every time someone "dies" or "goes missing", or "leaves forever", I'm just like, "Eh, they'll come back in a few chapters". It's like the author doesn't have the heart to kill characters, but they still want to play evil author.

Antagonists
Okay, so this action/sci-fi book has to have a main, evil, scientist villain, right? And there is. But there's a new one each book. I'm trying to remember every, single villain in this series, and I've got: Chu, Gunter- Hagen, Jeb, Anne Walker, and a dozen others. The main villain changes so often, that it's hard to see what the end goal is. In Harry Potter, you know he needs to take down Voldemort, in Percy Jackson, it's Kronos, and in Mockingjay, there is President Coin. Sure, not every book needs a person or being to defeat. It can be a virus, a natural disaster, or psychological problem, but this book is set up in the sense that we're supposed to defeat a villain. Unfortunately, you go through this book, and all the previous ones, not really knowing where you're going. The only thing you know is that Max needs to "save the world". Seriously vague.

Climax/Ending
SpoilerSo I don't even understand the Climax. It was like, one day Angel was like, "M'kay guys, we need to defeat the bad people." And then all of a sudden, they were prepared to fight. It was a matter of hours. That shouldn't have been enough time to prepare everyone for war. There were thousands of people according to Max. I just felt like, overall, the whole climax was seriously rushed.
So that brings me to the end.
SpoilerMax got pregnant? 7 year olds will be war leaders, 15 year olds will get pregnant, and 3rd graders will play with bombs.
