This was honestly one of the best series i’ve ever read.

Every character had their flaws, even the renegades.

Every single character in this trilogy was morally grey (even Ace Anarchy and Captain Chromium/Hugh) they all had their reasons.

Ace fought for prodigy rights but lost sight of his goal along the way, Hugh wanted to help the world but soon resorted to what the public expected because the pressure was to much. Considering the entire world was counting on the renegades to help and save them, not only did they have to become superheroes, but every other job the city had (as nova says multiple times throughout the books).

However, i did find myself rooting for the anarchists considering the renegades were as shallow and self absorbed as the anarchists were believed to be, but i understand the councils decisions and how they, too, lost sight of their goals, similar to ace anarchy.

All things considered though, Nova was the most morally grey AND powerful character throughout the whole series (other than ace with his helmet). She infiltrated renegade HQ, took down and neutralised one of their best patrol units, took back ace anarchy’s helmet, won a 1V3 against said patrol unit and somehow managed not to get caught. ALL.IN.ONE.NIGHT.

Not to mention shes not even seventeen yet.

And whilst she did all that, she still had a conscience. She managed to do ALL THAT and not lose sight of her morals. Especially when she shot her MOTHER FIGURE, the woman who quite literally raised nova as if she was her own IN ORDER TO SAVE ADRIAN. As much as he was the enemy, she knew that he was a genuine good and innocent person who didn’t deserve to die at the hands of an anarchist. And even though we know novas feelings played a part in this, if it was Oscar, Ruby, or even Danna we all know she would’ve done the same.

Her whole life (after the age of 6) she was surrounded with corrupted villains and role models who taught her that violence, betrayal and lies were always the answer, and yet, SHE STILL HAD A CONSCIENCE AND A MORAL COMPASS.

But her goals were to get revenge on the people who failed her, she was neither good nor evil, she was neither  good renegade or evil anarchist. And i could write a big long paragraph like this for every character in this series but i chose nova as the example because she was the most PERFECTLY written, morally grey character.
