Twisted Pride by Cora Reilly

3.0

I knew I was going to gobble this story up. Give me a prim and proper 'too good for everything' Outfit woman and the eldest Falcone in all his hotheaded arrogance. He kidnapped her from her wedding to weaken the Chicago Outfit and her territory is at war with his. Do I even have to guess what happens next? Trust them to lose their heads and kill each other in cold blood. Remo Falcone is unhinged at his best; he could be thick as thieves with Dante and Luca. I don't know why they bother declaring war. I was relieved Serafina's family treated her well, I don't think I could have handled another messed up kid with family issues. Despite being society's sweetheart ice princess, the capo's neice, she had an impossible temper and wasn't used to bowing down to obedience, the people in her life made sure she never had to. Remo always thrived on a good challenge and Serafina was the perfect opponent he could ever ask for. All those Nino-Kiara snippets and Scuderi's death were my favorite parts in the entire book. Camorra and Famiglia made sure the bastard Scuderi received the most satisfactory death for his crimes. I originally planned to give it 2 stars but Remo convincing Samuel to attend their wedding for Serafina's sake did it for me. Overall, it was a nice enemies to lovers read, with a captor-captive theme and forbidden romance thrown in.

Things That Didn't Work Out:

-I can't get past the fact that the Falcone brothers treat women like shit except Adamo; he's such a sweetheart. Do they really have to refer to the women they are hooking up with as whores? They don't deserve to be disrespected just for doing their job.

-I couldn't process how fast the characters went from despising each other to catching feelings only by a couple intimate moments. Their chemistry was totally off-putting which made it hard to form any kind of particular attachment.

-The signs were there but the sudden pregnancy still came as a surprise. I adored Navio and Greta but it felt like their appearance was mainly for the sake of pushing Remo and Serafina together cause it was their children's presence that forced them to acknowledge their feelings for each other.

-I would have liked it a lot better if they didn't overuse those bird references in every situation.

Quotes I Liked:

“Your pride will be your downfall,” “And your fury will be yours.” “Then we’ll fall together. Isn’t that the beginning of every tragic love story?”

“You took something from me, true, but you’re not the only one doing the taking. Maybe you don’t see it yet, but with every bit you take from me, you’re giving me a bit of yourself in return, Remo, and you will never get it back.”

“You believe in God?” “No. I don’t. But looking at you, I could turn into a believer.”

“Love can bloom in the darkest place, and ours did wildly, freely, untamable.”
