I just finished this book after gobbling it up within 24 hours. This could have been very same-y in the Southern lit category what with it being about impoverished little girls living with a physically and emotionally abusive stepfather; however, the characters themselves and a twist on the Southern abuse storyline saves this book from that fate. Instead it is fresh and interesting and just pretty much unputdownable.
