It Ends with Us
by Colleen Hoover
"Imagine all the people you meet in your life. There are so many. They come in like waves, trickling in and out with the tide. Some waves are much bigger and make more of an impact than others. Sometimes the waves bring with them things from deep in the bottom of the sea and they leave those things tossed onto the shore. Imprints against the grains of sand that prove the waves had once been there, long after the tide recedes."
CoHo does it again, y'all. When does she not?! Another novel I flew through in one sitting that had me laughing and crying (but mostly crying). This book is a must read for every human out there. Every single one of them. There is so much of life that is black and white, so many things we can't understand until we are living them ourselves. This story is beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful and teaches us that loves doesn't always heal all things.
Lily Bloom grew up watching her father hit her mother and never understood why her mother didn't just leave. Years later, when she falls in love with attractive neurosurgeons, Ryle Kincaid, she realizes the decision to leave isn't always so easy. She finds herself forgiving his violent outbursts until one day, it goes too far. She must make a difficult choice - to stay or go.
I totally understood Lily's point of view - when it's not you int he abusive situation, it's hard to understand how and why someone stays. Watching her father hit her mother (and loving a boy who suffered at the hands of an abuser) made it seem so simple. When she meets Ryle, she's swept off her feet (how could she not be?!), but the first day he hurts her, she knows thing are bad. Yet she finds herself making excuses for him time and time again. His past is no excuse, but it certainly makes things a bit more complicated. The outbursts keep coming until she finally finds the courage to leave and lean on a life long friend (Atlas <3). I loved the glimpses into Lily's past that we get through her draft letters to Ellen and loved her love for Atlas and how she took care of him! And the ending was just perfect - it wasn't tied up in a perfect bow and I love that.
