Brynne Weaver’s Butcher & Blackbird had me captivated from the first page. While there were certainly some moments in this book that were literal torture to read, and it’s definitely not for anyone who is squeamish, as a lover of thrillers this was right up my alley. I instantly fell in love with the characters and throughout the entire book I was worried about them and rooting for them. It was surprisingly easy to forget that these two people were brutal serial killers in their own right, but we’re not going to talk about my ability to put that aside without thought (it’s fiction, and we all know that red flags in fiction can and should be easily be ignored—as long as we recognize them as red flags and don’t go seeking them out in real life relationships). The plot was fun, interesting, and unique, as was the relationship between our beloved Butcher and Blackbird. I loved how everything was tied together so nicely and I loved how the second book was alluded to, but didn’t take away from the story of the first book in any way. I would highly recommend adding this to your TBR, IF AND ONLY IF YOU HAVE READ ALL OF THE TRIGGER WARNINGS!!!! There are a lot of them, and though the book is fantastic and handles them all well, it is definitely not, I REPEAT NOT, for everyone. There are very graphic depictions of pretty much everything on the list of triggers so PLEASE heed my warning if you are squeamish in any way. Admittedly it was worse than I was expecting, even though I was able to read it. There were scenes that turned my stomach and had me asking myself why I was doing this to myself, but also I couldn’t put it down even if I tried because it was also that good.
