The Sellout
by Paul Beatty
“The Sellout” is a blistering satire on race in America. The protagonist is a young black farmer in LA and his attempt to bring segregation back. What that is the main narrative, the book is filled with such intentional absurdities pushed to a hilt – all to show the ironies around how we treat race in this country in everything –towns, schools, economy, entertainment, and many more. I felt that the book makes a point about our treatment being broad, in your face, but still superficial. Further, I think the book makes the point that we have attempted to put in a post-racial state without fully resolving issues or letting things heal and that is a problem. The book is brimming with clever satirical memes throughout, but unfortunately, that’s all there is. The main story does not attempt to seriously pull you along after it made its main point early in the book.
