The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey

4.0

It's hard comparing books like this, that are very much products of their time with modern literature. I have to admit that I ended up appreciating this book a lot more after reading up extensively on the time period it was written in.

If you read this I have a few recommendations:
1) Realize the humor is very typical for the time period, as is the writing style.
2) Read up on the cultural norms, the cultural reactions to Vietnam, and how soldiers were treated/reacted to coming home.
3) Read a few gossip magazines or about the popular entertainment of the time.

While this book has an underlying moral message, it Lampoons everything from The Lone Ranger to the standard family sitcom, from the hippy culture of the 70s to religion. If you aren't familiar with these references there is a big chance you won't appreciate this book. I'd suggest reading a literary introduction written for one of the reprints, it should give you the proper context when opening this book.
