The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
5.0

Wow. Just... wow...

You know how with your favorite books, you envy other people their first read? Your emotions ping back and forth between jealousy, anticipation, and excitement for them... and you almost wish you could watch their faces as they get that first exposure to a story that you know, you just KNOW, will embed itself into their hearts and minds for the rest of their lives.

I was that new reader. This is one of those books. I can't believe I only found Allende now. I am obsessed with Allende now. This book... needs to be read. By everyone. All people. Now. And I want to watch. (Is that creepy?)

Like. Ok... first of all, what a freaking imagination on this woman. Stunning scenes depicted with originality that feels heartbreakingly rare. Floating green hair. Clairvoyant women. A blue silk sailboat ship of a bed. And on and on but I'm not doing it justice because the writing is too beautiful and the ideas too vibrant to capture or describe with my mere mortal hands.

ALSO THIS SHIT IS FUNNY. The sense of humor is playful and wild and smart and witty. It's magical, truly, and will catch you unawares. Hit my funny bone real hard while I was in public which drew a bunch of stares, and frankly, my dear, I didn't give a damn.

Because I was lost to this sprawling world of women and their stories and their histories. I want to read it again. I want to take a semester-long class just on the pages of this one book. I want to bathe in its pages and drown myself in the spell-like words that expanded the breadth of my own imagination. Honestly, it makes me want to cry tears of joy that there's a human alive right now that's capable of writing something like this. It's almost too much.

So, because I'm afraid that I've understated my enthusiasm... yea, this is one of the best books I have ever read. Top 20, maybe top 10. And I'm already excited to discover the treasures that a second read holds.
