The idea is cute and I like the characters initially, but the end plot doesn't really make sense to me. The big reveal happens and they are suddenly back to war and the best reason they provide for this is that the warlord is angry and has no other outlet for said anger? We're just leaning into the stereotypes about orcs that they are incapable of higher cognition or restraint from violence. The fact that we are also relying on a jealous ex to report this crucial information seems rather sketchy as well. I peeked at the beginning of the next book and the plot seems to center around finding Z's human father in the hopes that A.) he is alive, B.) he is willing to acknowledge Z, and C.) he can even teach Z magic. But we're also on the cusp of war, so I'm not sure that that should be the main priority. I don't think I will continue the series.
