If you think Everyone Is Lying To You, you’re right.

One lie that is prevalent in our day-to-day lives, is the outcry for “authentic” influencers. Jo Piazza excellently delves into this particular topic in a killer way. Addressing themes like jealousy, comparison, and parasocial relationships, Piazza wonderfully tied them together in this who-dunnit plot that personally had me devouring this book every free chance I had.

Concerning the theme of parasocial relationships in the book (my favorite), it was both intriguing and frightening to crawl into the headspace of insanely popular influences for a couple of afternoons, seeing how they operate and deliver their perfect version of authenticity. More than that though, I loved that Piazza illustrated this social dynamic stretching across the walkway of social media and into our everyday lives with normal people we know and love. Or obsess over. Adding the breaking of fourth wall — both in tense and with the title — was also a genius touch that I truly appreciated.

For prospective readers: this book is written in dual POV and is written in multiple tenses (past, present, and future, as well as addressing the reader). It is a fast-paced novel with emphasis on plot and you will be glued to your couch for an afternoon reading this. There is gore as well as themes of abuse throughout the book, so check TW’s!

This was such an interesting read, even void of the plot. In my eyes, it was a sociological study on how social media is currently impacting our personal relationships for the good and the (mostly?) bad. Couldn’t put it down.
