I thought that this was in all ways an improvement over the first book. It cut down on the parts I liked the least, mainly the Drow politicking, and just focused more on the protagonists story: our boy Drizzt!

I enjoyed his adventuring and exploration of the Underdark, learning more about what terrifying enemies Mindflayers can be and just meeting different races in general.

My favorite part definitely was the camaraderie that this book offered as Drizzt is meeting his first real (humanoid) friend. And obviously we cannot forget about his truly special bond with his panther Guenhwyvar which also gets explored a lot more in this volume.

I also liked that we got another major character introduction with the rogue / mercenary Jarlaxle who absolutely has a very famous name in the forgotten realms and is in his brief appearances within this book already a way more interesting character than any of the Drow not named Drizzt (or Zaknafein I guess).

I am excited for the conclusion of the Dark Elf Trilogy!
