Bone Crier's Moon by Kathryn Purdie

4.0

Ha! Once more luck was on my side! Fairyloot included another book that was already on my wishlist in one of their boxes. I had contemplated taking this book with me to my parents, but eventually decided not to. But, since I'm back home now there was no reason not to delve into this story. So, this morning I picked up the book and started reading.

And from the very first page I was sucked in and the story actually never let me go again. That's mostly because there's never really a dull moment in the book, even though it's quite a big book. Yes, there are moments of characters talking and doing normal things, but there is a lot of action and tension too. There's most of all a lot of danger and because of the multiple point of views we always know a little more than the characters, which only makes it more exciting and thrilling.

The true star of the book is the world and the mythology. I was incredibly fascinated by the Bone Crier's, their faith and most of all their rituals. And due to the very vivid writing style I could almost feel the awe and wonder myself whenever something mythologic and breathtaking was described. And I have the feeling that this book doesn't even scratch the tip of the iceberg yet. I'm pretty sure there's much more mythology and background to be discovered and revealed in the upcoming sequel.

On top of that I also liked the characters and most of all their complexity when it comes to their morality. Every character in this book, both the "good" guys and the "bad" guys, has redeeming qualities or flaws. Every character is motivated by very strong things and life events and has a very good reason to act the way they act and do what they do. Therefore it's easy to root for them, but at times also hard to decide who or what to root for.

And like I already said, it feels that in a way this story is only the beginning. I will certainly pre-order the second book, because I'm curious where this will eventually go.
