The Midnight Star by Marie Lu

Wow.
This is a deep book, I'll tell you that much. I loved the ending so very, very much. And for the most part, the plot seemed coherent and entertaining. I would rate it 5 stars—I really would—but I can't bring myself to forget the unexplained holes found, not only throughout this book, but throughout the entire series.

This is probably the best book in the Young Elites trilogy, and it definitely ended the series with a bang. The first book I found to be quite unneeded, filled only with a small amount of background info, and a plot that was never really wrapped up well. You would think the second book would complete the issues faced in the first book, but rather than continuing with the same conflict, another one was born. This same occurrence arose with the third book as well. Each book in the series could have been its own mini-series, had the plot gone different ways. And perhaps that was the point Marie Lu was trying to make—her character having endured so many conflicts over the course of her life. But, I feel as though the series as a whole would've felt more coherent and meaningful had Lu mentioned some of the background knowledge needed to understand the plot of this third book, prior to the book itself.

My opinion of this book specifically: it was really very interesting! While it got off to a rocky start at the beginning—a slightly monotonous repetition of the same lines, the same events, and ultimately the dark irony one might find had the Jews killed everyone that wasn't Jewish after WWII—the story progressed quickly. I didn't really feel much of a connection with the characters—with the exception of Magiano, of course—until this book in the series. But, it was interesting to read Greek mythology meets dark fantasy, with a touch of historical references, and all of it in the point of view of the antagonist without being annoyingly cliché. All in all, this book was great, and I can't wait to see what Marie Lu writes next!
