My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich
by Ibi Zoboi
This books is fabulous.
What isn't said in the summary, is that the mc is quite clearly neurodivergent. All of the one star reviews complain that E-Grace is annoying and her narrative is confusing, what none of them seem to take into account is that she is quite clearly not nt. E-Grace uses her star trek analog as a coping mechanism for her life and her own troubles--ostrization by her peers and her mother's overprotection.
A story about lonliness, friendship, and telling the truth. This is a book that I felt as if I could relate to. While the switching between narratives (real life and Cadet E-Grace's) was slightly confusing at the beginning, I caught on within the first few chapters. The comics really added a lot. Zoboi's beautiful, lyrical writing has once again prevailed. Both in Pride and My Life her writing shines. Gorgeous, gorgeous gorgeous. And with the fabulous and diverse characterization, this is a great book about friendship. Really adored it.
