The Reckless Mind: Intellectuals in Politics by Mark Lilla
5.0
Want to know why some of the world's sharpest minds have been drawn to radical and in some cases inexcusable ideologies? Then I highly recommend Lilla's brilliant book!
Its fairly short and easily readable, with Lilla doing a tremendous job of analysing the six thinkers looked at.
"Socrates suggests that such intellectuals play an important role in driving democracies towards tyranny by whipping the minds of the young into a frenzy, until some of them, perhaps the most brilliant and courageous, take the step from thought to action and try to realise their tyrannical ambitions in politics."
"Maintaining an ideology requires work because political developments always threaten its plausibility."
