Solid start to a mystery series. There was a bit of a learning curve at first as I struggled to keep all the characters straight. However I liked the atmospheric setting in a small town in northern Iceland where everyone knows everyone else. Having the main narrator, Ari Thor, be a newcomer to the town was helpful since he also has a lot to learn about the town residents. This isn’t a very scary or dark story, but not a cozy mystery either. Somewhat between the two. A great wintry read!

Synopsis
Policeman Ari Thor has just arrived at the tiny town of Siglufjordir in northern Iceland, leaving behind his girlfriend Kristin in Reykjavik. Accessible only through a mountain tunnel, Ari Thor arrives just before Christmas as the town is going into its winter hibernation. When a local celebrity author falls to his death during a rehearsal for the town Dramatic Society’s winter production, foul play is suspected. Shortly thereafter, a woman is found bleeding in the snow. Could the two incidents be connected? Will Ari Thor be able to prove his worth and solve both cases despite the fact that many of the townspeople regard him as an outsider and untrustworthy? And with the town cut off from the rest of Iceland thanks to winter storms and an avalanche blocking the only road, is anyone really safe?
