Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum

5.0

My first 5 star read for this year! I saw this on Booktok and tried it out, and I loved it to bits!

The story could've been boring and cliché but it wasn't. It seemed more realistic, had interest subplots and writing that fit with the book, compared to stories similar to this one. I enjoyed reading the 'three things' Jessie and SN shared to each other, it gave them characteristics and not just people in a book. I could relate to a lot of what was happening and because of that I didn't mind the girl to girl hate as it makes the story more practical to what would happen in real life and yes, most people would definitely not want to read about that (which I understand 100%) but I don't mind if there's not much of it so yeah. The writing in general wasn't cringe as most first person POV's are, and expressed Jessie's feelings so you could somewhat feel what she was going through.

The characters were also well done. Jessie while she wasn't the best protagonist because of her whining about L.A at the start of the book, I think she definitely ticks all my boxes for a good main character. My favourite character though was Ethan, mostly since I could relate to him with his interest of poetry, writing, reading and being 'weird', but also because he was so kind and understanding, honestly there was nothing bad about him and I certainly understood why Jessie would like him (I would too if he were real!). The other characters were great too. Liam was a good edition and added some drama which I enjoyed reading. Scar, Dri and Agnes were good friends that had their downsides which again, made the story practical and relatable. And SN was obviously the most iconic character of the book. Without him, I doubt the story would even be made into a book. He was so mysterious and I thought he was one person one chapter and another person another chapter. In the background, you were thinking about who SN was while reading Jessie's life, and I was glad that it wasn't bluntly obvious who he was.

I also love the cover! (waffle reference is adorable)
I'm so happy with the ending and the reveal of SN, it perfectly wrapped up both the sub and main plots. I definitely recommend reading this unless you don't like girl to girl hate or whiny characters. This is definitely a re-read as next time I want to annotate this book:D
