A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life by George Saunders

informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

5.0

Though I didn't always agree with Saunders in how he viewed the characters in these selected Russian short stories, he doesn't present his views in a prescriptive "this is how we must see this" sort of way. At the end, he makes sure to emphasize that he is just one guy, one writer and teacher and reader, who has spent a lot of time thinking about these stories and how they work on a writing level, and maybe you'll get something out of those thoughts too. And I did. I'm smarter for having read this, and any further reading I do by these authors will be that much more enhanced.
