Outside Looking In by T.C. Boyle

2.0

This was a slow, extremely frustrating read. I am giving it two stars solely because T. C. Boyle is one of my favorite authors, and I am so disheartened and disappointed in this book. One would think that characters around Timothy Leary's time at Harvard and Millbrook could be fascinating, but it is NOT. A few things on writing style - I have never read a book with so much passive retelling. As in - skip three days, then go back and tell bare snippets of an event with no conversation between characters whatsoever. Sure- they may be all in their head due to psilocybin and LSD, but please, please create 3-dimensional characters with some dialogue. Lastly it is clear that T.C. Boyle does not know what it is like to be poor. Seriously. No clue. Ugh. The descriptions of poor people with savings accounts? Are you kidding? Ridiculous. Do not read. Should be one star.
