I think I’m just a nonfiction Orwell girl.  Lots of this really dragged, there was nothing interesting or particularly captivating in the characters here, and not that much plot to speak of. That being said, the dystopian worldbuilding and political discussions are clearly the strongest parts (and the parts Orwell cared to develop), and have been hugely influential ever since this was first published.

I really really HATE Julia as a character. I’m sorry, but she’s just a vessel for Winston to care about something (a girl half his age, no less!).

I’m glad I finally finished this, after reading the first part exactly a year ago and never bothering to pick it back up again. Recently, I’ve been reading a lot of Orwell’s essays, and I’m going to stick to those for now.  While I'd personally much rather read the essay version of this (I feel like I already have -- in The Lion and the Unicorn), I understand that fiction is how you get the masses to read and discuss your thoughts.  it is what it is.
