The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

4.5

4.5 stars!

When Nahri, a con artist with dreams of being a healer, accidentally summons a mythical djinn, she sets off a dangerous chain of events that lands her squarely in the political games of the djinn city of Daevabad.

It took me forever to get through this book, but not for lack of interest. I think the world that the author crafted is intriguing and compelling, which kept me reading even though I haven’t been in the mood for fantasy lately. I’m so glad I persisted, because this book really ramps up in the final third to go out with a bang.

The characters were all likeable, yet deeply flawed. I found Nahri to be a frustrating and often selfish character while simultaneously rooting for her success at every turn. Ali’s perspective was so valuable in introducing the court politics of Daevabad, but he’s hotheaded and makes brash decisions that never pan out well.

I really struggled with the pacing of the first half of the book. There are often time slips in between chapters and it made it difficult to get a sense for Nahri and Dara’s relationship as it progressed.

I’m so glad I enjoyed this and I’m excited to continue with the rest of the series! I think it’s really something special.
