Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst
3.0

This book was fine. It’s a little slow and the writing isn’t the best, and there’s more telling than there is showing when it comes to the characters talents and motivations. The map at the beginning of the book is one of the most confusing fantasy maps I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t figure out which borders were which. That’s kind of important in a book about war between kingdoms. The “smart things” that Denna says are pretty basic and the Directorate is utterly incompetent and I couldn’t ever figure out what their motivations were for particular choices. But the romance between the two main characters was sweet and I’m always down to go back to my horse girl roots. I will read the second one because I’m intrigued by the magic rules, and I hope that more world building and secondary character development will be present.
