Recently had a bad day at work, saw that this old favorite of mine was available from my library, and spent my entire day off reading it through. This book absolutely holds up! The main character who do desperately wants to belong within her own family, even in the face of her own unique gifts and path, is SO relatable. With the benefit of emotional distance, we the readers understand that she has her own place in the world, but it's also so heartbreaking how "you matter, and you're different" can be such an emotional blow. Additionally, this is the library I've always dreamed of. Please bring on all the secret rooms, chained magic, hidden tunnels, and Disreputable Dogs! So glad this book still gives me just as much comfort now as when I read it for the first time.
