The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang
4.0
This was a heavy book and unfortunately unsurprising. Much more should be said about the cruelty and ruthlessness of the Japanese in Asia- specifically during, but not limited to World War II.
Reading accounts like this one muddies the waters for those today trying to decry the United States bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
As a Japanese American I am disgusted that Japan has never been held to account for its wartime atrocities. It certainly feels like most people today seem to forget (or just straight up not know) Japans warlike history and acts of violence because of Hello Kitty and Nintendo.
