Storm Glass by Maria V. Snyder

4.0

Please note: I received an ARC of this one; it's actually due out in May.
If there's one thing you can rely on Maria V. Snyder for, it's a fast-paced and exciting read, and Storm Glass is no exception. Opal Cowan (who has previously appeared in, I think, two of the Yelena books?) is a glassmaker and a magician in training; she is used to thinking of herself as a one trick wonder, making magical glass figurines but otherwise unable to master the most basic of spells. However, when the glass orbs used by the Stormdancer clan to capture the power of storms start mysteriously breaking, Opal's unique abilities make her the best choice to investigate. What she finds out is, of course, more dangerous and complicated than she expected, involving dark magic and calling on Opal to use powers she never knew she had.
If you liked the Yelena books, you will probably like this one, too, although for me Opal doesn't quite have the appeal Yelena did. She's an intriguing character with a complicated history despite her young age, and it is easy to have sympathy for her struggles to fit in at the Citadel and to overcome the tragedy of her past. It's fun to watch her interact with the other characters, from the brooding Stormdancer Kade to her haughty classmate Pazia, whom I expect will become a Paris to Opal's Rory (obligatory Gilmore Girls reference). I know that the Yelena books have been released in YA editions, and I think Storm Glass would also be appropriate for older teens (the heroine is nineteen, and there is sexual content, which is non-explicit). If you haven't read the Study series, I wouldn't necessarily say you need to before you read Storm Glass, although I think it would give you more insight into what Opal has been through by this point. All in all, Storm Glass has much of what I look for in a fun read, lots of adventure, likable characters, and a touch of humor and romance.
