I am so invested in this series and in Ellery and Reed. I thought the kidnapping was a nice change of pace and thematically it tied together the mystery, Ellery (and Reed's) flaws and history, and Tula and the status of Ellery and Reed's relationship. I think Schaffhausen is brilliant at balancing these books between the emotional metaplot and the mystery of the day.
