Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur

5.0

By far the most eye-opening and impactful read of my year so far. Assata’s story is one of strength and resilience and revolution. From reading about her life, I learned things I had never known about America’s history and it’s leaders. I learned about the history of black people in America, parts of their struggle that are beyond what you could ever imagine. And I learned about myself. My eyes were opened to my own privilege and prejudice in a way that I know has sparked permanent changes in my life. The way Assata weaves together the different parts of her story was brilliant. The switch back and forth between stories of her early life to the events after her arrest was so powerful. My own words cannot do justice to hers but I believe that this story is an important one, with a message that everybody needs to hear.
