I turn back to this book whenever I'm feeling a little bit burnt out or lost in the therapeutic process. Reading it, I cannot help but hear a gentle, old man's voice narrating in my head-- the radical empathy and genuineness is apparent even in his writing style. You will recognize his value in process over theory, human being over diagnosis, and the value in helping the client to experience what it means to be fully seen and understood. The way his book chapters read are telling: "Make the Patient Matter to You" "Create a new therapy for each patient" "On taking patients further than you have gone" "On being helped by your patient" I would recommend this book to any new, aspiring, and practicing helping professional.
