The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor
3.0

I wanted to love this. I really did.

While this story focuses on some interesting themes relating to family, culture, conflict, identity, bodily autonomy, and racism, the plot unfortunately wasn't strong enough to keep me interested. For me, Binti: Home and Binti: Night Masquerade suffer because they fail to focus on the most interesting part of this universe: Oomza Uni.

Give me chapters about classes and alien students and teachers at Oomza Uni. They don't even have to be good chapters, I'll take four chapters of Okwu floating round campus obnoxiously blowing gas in everyone's faces! I'm not exaggerating when I say that the final chapter of this book was of more interest than the previous two books combined!

This review is so hard to write because it had so much potential but the arc just focuses on the right character at the wrong time. There's so much to this world, but I feel like all the cool shit just sat on the sidelines.

SIIIIIIIIGH.
