Out of Control: A True Story of Kidnap, Survival and Hope
by Alisa Henin
Earlier this week I attended the Every Victim Every Time Conference in Bryan, TX and had the honor of listening to the survivor who wrote this book speak. As an advocate at a domestic violence agency I decided to sit in on her session at the conference and I do not regret it. Alisa is such a strong and resilient survivor and reading her book only further reaffirmed that for me. Her story is one that very clearly depicts how quickly domestic violence can escalate and become life threatening. It also explains how something that may seem small to an average person (like leaving a “sweet note” can actually be so dangerous for a victim of DV. Domestic violence isn’t just the physical abuse, it’s the financial abuse, emotional, stalking, harassment and so much more. Abusers will go to extreme lengths to continue to have power and control over their victims and this story shows that in many ways. There’s so much more I would like to say, but this is not my story to tell…. I will let Alisa Henin do that through her book.
