A charming and entertaining story that feels absolutely true to the middle-grade experience in spite of its highly unusual main character. I was drawn in emotionally, loved the voice, and found the plot engaging. A total win.

Just a mild content warning for animal-sensitive folks of a subplot involving a dog with cancer. I'll spoil the subplot here in general terms in case it helps anyone to know in advance what happens.

The dog is diagnosed with terminal cancer and is given a year or less to live, but he ends up being adopted into a good home, and is still alive at the end of the book.
