Little & Lion
by Brandy Colbert
As a person living with bipolar disorder, I was nervous to read this book. My greatest hope was to feel seen, and my greatest worry was that it would be harmful representation. The five star rating shows that I got the former not the later, but I got more than I signed up for. I saw arguments I have had with my husband, conversations I have had with my parents, and my brothers concerned voice on the phone from across the country every time I don’t “sound right” from their point of view. I can now better understand my husband’s fear, for example, when I completely reorganized our closet at 2am- I can hear how “I’m fine, stop worrying so much, this is totally normal behavior, I’m just motivated right now” sounded to him, and how he felt in that moment. Most of all, of course, I can understand how my parents felt when I went off my meds for the exact same reasons Lion did, at almost the same age, with similar results. I came here looking for a mirror, but I got a window- I will recommend this to my bipolar friends as such.
