sarastar 's review for:
Black Beauty
by Anna Sewell
A reread of a childhood classic was even better the second time.
This is the first book I read that started my journey to all others.
I spotted this book cover with the most beautiful horse on it with a diamond white spot on it's forehead.
And I had to read it.
Anna Sewell's writing is flowing and seamless capturing this unique POV is brilliant storytelling.
Black Beauty's journey is told vividly. His mother Duchess, and his life at Farmer Grey's when his name was Darkie. Ginger's sad and rough life and Merrylegs, and the way masters treat horses is almost akin to humans treating each other. All the places he moved to and the horses he met along the way as they come and go reveals a tale of kindness and cruelty of life and owners how they treat their horses. At the end he comes full circle and is finally home again with some of his old friends and he will live out his life happy.
These majestic creatures that carried men wide and far, in battle and play, work and in so many ways was a main transportation for man in this time period.
There are deep meanings and puns in her story.
Anna Sewell loved horses and understood the love and care for animals that made this book a gem
