Swing Time
by Zadie Smith
I randomly chose this book off a library recommendation list. There wasn’t anything about its description I found particularly alluring, a story about two dancers and their lifelong friendship just doesn’t call out to me (and this isn’t all the plot is by far but I try to read as little about a book as possible before finishing it), but I saw it was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and I usually enjoy these selections so I decided to give it a try and to my surprise I really enjoyed it.
The story was unique and original, it was engaging but I never felt rushed, and very important to me, the characters felt believable and real (if perhaps particularly lucky in their early careers). What I went looking for was a story to get lost in, to distract me, to entertain me enough to fully engage my brain and that’s exactly what I found. The audiobook narration by Pippa Bennett-Warner was a particular surprise delight and really enhanced the story (in a first for me I didn’t even have to customize the playback speed) and I’m quite excited to discover she’s also narrated a number of other books on my reading list.
