Ugh, this book was awful. DNF at page 56. The first book was ok. But this one seems like it was put together hastily. The writing is just terrible. Not one single character has any depth and I just don't like Gilly at all. She is so completely full of herself. When she picks Jax's pocket at the beginning of the book in an attempt to thwart the school's nemesis, she says, "Yeah, I still got it." And for someone who feels uncomfortable being called a hero, she certainly isn't bothered by it enough to change anything about it. And for someone who claims to hate royals so much, she spends a lot of time saying, "look at me, look at me" (a la Julia Stiles in 1o Things I Hate About You). Also, Gilly really loves her family and misses them, blah blah, but she's just too important to go home to them. Who's going to save Enchantasia if Gilly is no longer at school? Only a self-important, shallow tween has the power to save the world from the most evil villain who ever existed, right? And Blackbeard shows up talking in pirate speak that really ended up sounding more Scottish or even, dare I say, Peter from I Love You, Man. And everything that can have an acronym has one. FTRS. HEAS. RLW. Seriously, SMH. Don't get this book for your kids. There is better out there for them.
