After That Night by Karin Slaughter
3.0
This was my first Karin Slaughter book, and while I enjoyed the story, I struggled with the reading experience due to the structure and pacing. The long chapters, with no clear paragraph breaks to break them up, created a mental block for me—I often found myself reluctant to pick it back up. It felt like a commitment every time I sat down to read, which definitely took away from the overall enjoyment.
The plot itself was intriguing, with Slaughter’s signature dark and gritty storytelling. However, the heavy use of technical medical vocabulary made certain sections feel dense and slow. While I appreciate attention to detail, it sometimes felt like it disrupted the flow of the narrative.
⚠️ Trigger warning: This book deals with sensitive topics, including rape and abuse, which are central to the story. Slaughter doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, and some parts were particularly hard-hitting.
Despite my struggles with the structure, I did enjoy the mystery and investigation. The story kept me engaged, but I felt the ending was a little rushed—there were no clear hints leading up to it, which made it feel abrupt rather than satisfying.
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 – A solid thriller with a gripping story, but the long chapters and dense writing style made it harder to stay fully immersed. If you’re a Karin Slaughter fan, you’ll likely enjoy this, but it wasn’t the easiest read for me.
