The Gloaming
by Kirsty Logan
Kirsty Logan’s writing is sheer magic. This book is a thing of beauty (I read the hardback version). Before you even begin reading it is a lovely object, with a glorious cover illustration, fabulous endpapers, and tiny mermaids swimming beneath the chapter titles. As for the story, it’s a melancholy yet captivating tale which sits somewhere between magical realism and contemporary fiction, if you want to try to fit it in a genre. It reminds me very much of Angela Carter, but with a lighter touch and more magic. As with The Gracekeepers, this is one of those novels that filled my head so full of imagery and ideas that I almost wanted to reread it the minute I finished it. I know it will stay with me for a very long time.
